Job Summary:
The Research Associate – Field Support & Data Management will implementation of research in Uganda in the framework of the One CGIAR Initiative “Sustainable Animal Productivity for Livelihoods, Nutrition and Gender Inclusion” (SAPLING). The aim of SAPLING is to enable 800,000 livestock producers – especially women and youth in 7 countries to engage in inclusive livestock value chains and achieve sustainable productivity gains resulting in improved livelihoods. Uganda is one of seven countries identified as a focus country for this initiative given the importance of livestock in the livelihoods of its people and the commitment of public and private actors to transform food systems through sustainable livestock development.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Support implementation of field surveys and experiments ensuring compliance with research ethics principles
- Supervise field data collection, entry, cleaning and uploading of data to the server
- Configure survey tools into electronic data collection platforms such as ODK
- Collate datasets from surveys and experiments, and submit to ILRI data portal
- Draft field implementation reports
- Train field enumerators and teams piloting on-farm experiments
- Develop field budgets and fieldwork implementation work plans with support of the Field Coordinator, Finance Officer, and Administrative Officer
- Participate actively in SAPLING country meetings and workshops
Minimum Qualifications for this job:
- At least a BSc degree in Research Methods, Statistics, Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness Management, Animal Production, or a closely related field. An MSc degree will be an added advantage.
- Experience in field data collection and data management
- Experience in implementing field-based research and development activities in Uganda or elsewhere
- Fluency in English is essential to communicate in writing and speaking
- Ability to communicate effectively with different stakeholders from inside and outside of Uganda
- Ability to manage field teams and uphold the highest ethical standards by inspiring trust and treat all people with respect and personal integrity
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with researchers, enumerators, and livestock value chain actors
- Demonstrated skills in data management and implementation of electronic data collection in surveys
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills and ability to work collaboratively with people at all levels and from multiple disciplines and cultures in a respectful manner
- Willingness to travel locally, regionally, and internationally
